In the past few months, I have noticed an increasing number of client referrals from dentists (as well as self referrals) for anti-wrinkle injections into the masseter muscle.
The masseter muscle is one of the muscles involved in chewing. In clients who grind or clench their teeth, this muscle can undergo hypertrophy (enlarges) leading to worsening of their teeth grinding / jaw clenching.
Symptoms experienced include soreness around the jaw area, headaches, and in severe cases, broken and fractured teeth. Visually, this presents as squaring of the jaw.
I am a jaw clencher myself and getting anti-wrinkle injections into this area for me was life changing.
The relief in jaw discomfort, headaches and also neck tension was immediate and long lasting (about 4 months). The other effect I noticed was that my jaw was more feminine and slimmer.
I could also throw away my mouth guard designed to stop me from grinding in my sleep but it also stopped me from having a restful night sleep which was a bit useless!
As to the side effects, I am forced to be more lady like at the dining table as I find that I can no longer chew big chunks of meat – I am sure my fellow diners appreciate this! As with all medical procedures please weigh up the benefits against the small risks before embarking on your treatment.
