What is Mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is a technique that was originally developed in France by a physician called Michel Pistor in the early 1950’s. The term “mesoderm” is a term used in embryology and it is used to denote the layers in the embryo which goes on to develop skin and muscle. Essentially Mesotherapy refers to the treatment of the skin and muscle. When the technique was originally developed, it was used for the treatment of muscular and pain disorders only. Currently, Mesotherapy is used in numerous branches of medicine including sports and rheumatology, slimming and cellulite, hair loss and aesthetics. This technique is well known and widely practised in France and there, the treatment is reimbursed by their Medicare system.
What conditions can be treated by Mesotherapy?
In facial aesthetics, Mesotherapy involves the injection of small amounts of vitamins, minerals and other medications placed just under the surface of the skin. It is used for the treatment of a wide variety of skin conditions including aging and dry skin, hyperpigmentation, scarring and skin rejuvenation. The practitioner will vary the cocktail of medications used depending on the condition to be treated. For example in acne prone and oily skin, a cocktail may include retinoic acid (vitamin A), and a multi-vitamin. In aging skin, a cocktail may include hyaluronic acid for a plumping and hydrating effect on the skin. In hyperpigmentation, a cocktail of stabilised vitamin C, kojic acid and tranexamic acid is used. Normally a series of at least 3- 5 treatments are offered for the best results but clients often see an improvement in their skin texture after the first treatment. As a maintenance, one treatment every 3-6 months is recommended. Dr Marr uses electronic skin needling with Dermapen as collagen induction therapy to Mesotherapy injections in aging skin or scarred skin.
A course of at least 3 treatments spaced 6-8 weeks is recommended for best results
